UK Bed Sizes Explained: Single to Emperor

UK bed sizes follow their own conventions, and the names don’t always mean what you’d guess. Here’s the definitive rundown.

UK bed sizes at a glance

  • Single — 3’0″ x 6’3″ (90 x 190cm). The classic for children’s rooms, teenagers and guest rooms.
  • Small double — 4’0″ x 6’3″ (120 x 190cm). A generous single or a cosy double for one adult.
  • Double — 4’6″ x 6’3″ (135 x 190cm). The UK’s most common size. Fine for two — but restless sleepers should consider going bigger.
  • King — 5’0″ x 6’6″ (150 x 200cm). The sweet spot for couples, with extra length for taller sleepers.
  • Super king — 6’0″ x 6’6″ (180 x 200cm). Genuine luxury — you’ll need a room that can take it.
  • Emperor — 6’6″ x 6’6″ (200 x 200cm). The ultimate statement. Measure carefully.

How to choose your size

Measure the room, not just the bed. Allow 60cm minimum on each side for access. Tape the footprint out on the floor with masking tape — five minutes that prevents expensive regret.

Think about length too. If you’re over 6ft, the standard 6’3″ length can leave feet dangling. King sizes and above come in 6’6″ length.

When in doubt, size up. Almost nobody regrets buying a bigger bed. The jump from double to king is the single most impactful upgrade most couples can make to their sleep.
