What exactly is a divan bed?
A divan is an upholstered base — a sturdy, fabric-covered box — that your mattress sits directly on. Most divans include storage: drawers in the base, or an ottoman design where the whole top lifts on gas struts to reveal the compartment inside. The look is clean and tailored.
And a bed frame (bedstead)?
A bed frame has legs, side rails and a slatted or solid base, with the mattress sitting inside the frame. Upholstered bedsteads — the kind we specialise in — wrap the whole frame in fabric with a tall headboard. They’re the showpiece option.
Head-to-head: the honest comparison
Storage. Divans win outright. Drawers swallow clothes and bedding; ottoman divans hide even bulkier items. A standard bedstead offers only the space underneath — useful, but not the same.
Style. Bedsteads win. A tall winged headboard in plush velvet transforms a bedroom in a way a divan base alone can’t.
Room feel. Bedsteads, with visible legs and an open base, make small rooms feel larger. Divans sit flush to the floor — solid and cocooning, lovely in a generous room.
Support. Both are excellent when well made. Divans give a slightly firmer, more uniform platform; slatted bedsteads offer a touch more give and airflow.
Moving and access. Divans typically split into two halves, making them far easier to get up narrow UK staircases.
So which should you buy?
- Choose a divan if storage is a priority, your access is tight, or you want the best value per pound.
- Choose a bedstead if the bed is your room’s centrepiece or you love a tall headboard.
- Choose an ottoman if you want the bedstead look with divan-beating storage.
Can you mix and match?
Absolutely. Many customers pair a divan base with a tall, upholstered headboard — all the storage, all the drama. Browse divan beds and luxury bedsteads to compare, or ask us which we’d recommend for your room.
